The Reality of Homelessness
Becoming homeless is rarely a simple story. While public perception often links homelessness directly to addiction, the reality is far more complex. Drug or alcohol abuse can be a factor but many individuals lose their housing due to a variety of systemic and personal crises.
Here are the most common reasons people experience homelessness:
- Lack of affordable housing: Stagnant wages cannot keep up with skyrocketing rent prices.
- Poverty and unemployment: Sudden job loss leaves individuals without emergency savings.
- Foreclosure or eviction: Legal displacements force families out of stable environments.
- Medical emergencies: Sudden illness or injury.
- Domestic violence: Many individuals must choose between an abusive home or the street.
- Mental health challenges: A lack of accessible community support makes independent living difficult.
- Family breakdown: Divorce, sudden death, abandonment or being forced out as a youth.
Sadly, many of the people living on the street turn to substance use just to cope with the trauma of being homeless. We offer them help, not judgment.
Our Motto: There, but for the grace of God, go I.
