Meet Some Of The People We Have Helped
Meet Steve. We met Steve when he was broken down in tears. He fell asleep at McDonald’s and somebody stole his last $60 from his bag. We replaced some of his cash and were happy to be able to put a smile back on his face. Steve told us that he had been living on the street for nearly a year after his mother passed away. He also told us he had a brother but that he didn’t want to be a burden to him and his family. Steve is a big fan of our hot coffee he takes it extra sweet.
Meet Frank. We have known Frank for a little while now, long before he was in a wheelchair. One time we had to carry him to our car and get him to the pharmacy before they closed so he could get his prescriptions. After not seeing Frank for some time he told us that he had been in the hospital for several weeks, a wasp had burrowed deep into his leg. Frank loves our Meat-Lover potatoes, so we always prepare a little bit of a larger container especially just for him.

Meet Valerie. Valerie and her boyfriend Basil had been on the street for 2 years after they were evicted from their apartment. Their new landlord wanted to more than double their rent. Basil was mad at Valerie on the day we took this photo. He had fallen asleep at McDonald’s and someone stole one of his bags. He blamed Valerie for not watching over him while he slept. Hard to believe but little Valerie can pack away 3 Bacon and Grilled cheese sandwiches at a time and has done so on more than one occasion.
DIFY Charity was founded in February 2022, during the heart of the COVID-19 Pandemic, it also happened to be in the middle of an extreme cold snap, even by Montreal standards.
Dan Payne, our founder made a stop at his bank just before curfew fell into effect. As he entered the bank there lying on the floor was a petite woman with a dirty little white jacket pulled up over her head in what one could only assume was an attempt to block out the cold and the bright lights. She had on running shoes, no socks, no hat, no gloves, no blanket, no pillow and thin stretch pants.
After concluding his business Dan crept out and went straight home but he could only think about that poor little woman lying on that cold dirty floor. So he decided to take a chance and break curfew. He stuffed two bags full of warm clothing including a pair of boots, a coat, a comforter and a pillow. He also prepared some hot soup, sandwiches, a couple of snacks and some drinks. When he woke the woman to give her the items he was shocked to see that she was not much older than 19 or 20. The next day Dan told his friend and neighbor, Hamid, what had happened the night before. He told Hamid that he had a plan to put some food and warm clothing together and distribute them to the homeless people downtown. Without being asked to or any hesitation Hamid volunteered to go with him. Thus DIFY Charity was born. In the more than 2 years since its inception, volunteers have come and gone but DIFY Charity's mandate has remained the same, to help those who can't help themselves.
